The legend of Kahlúa was born in Mexico, and its story begins in 1936 with its creators, Senior Blanco, Montalvo Lara, and the Alvarez brothers. One of them had a great idea, two of them had rich and flavorful Arabica coffee, and the other, who was a chemist, made the idea a reality. Kahlúa is made from the finest ingredients found in the rural region of Veracruz, Mexico. The word “Kahlúa” has roots in ancient Arabic languages and means “slow,” referring to the coffee.
The main ingredient in Kahlúa is coffee. It can take up to 6 years to produce the perfect coffee beans for making the liqueur. Another ingredient in Kahlúa is rum, which is derived from sugarcane. The sugarcane juice is boiled with water, and after the alcohol is produced, the distillation process takes place. To produce the final product, Kahlúa, the coffee beans are blended with the alcoholic beverage after seven years. The perfectly roasted coffee is combined with the alcoholic beverage, and the mixture is left to “rest” for four weeks. After this period, the Kahlúa is bottled.
