The story behind this continental drink begins with John Martin, an English brewer living in Belgium, who shared the same love for exploration and adventure as Arthur Guinness. In 1944, Martin walked through the doors of St. James’s Gate in Dublin with a special request: to create a truly Irish stout, but with a bolder flavor and a sweeter aftertaste to suit the palate of his Belgian friends.
The brewers at Guinness, known for taking on challenges, accepted the task, and the result was a “black gold” fit for adventurers.
Next time you enjoy a Guinness, close your eyes and think of Belgium and the pioneering John Martin, who brought this unique version of the beer to life.
